Progress Medal 2011 is awarded to
Mr. J. David Frank

M.B.B.S.,F.R.C.S (Eng)
Consultant Paediatric Urologist
Chief Editor of the Journal of Pediatric Urology

With the volume 14 of Progress in Paediatric Urology, it is my privilege to acknowledge the essential role of David Frank in the development of Paediatric Urology throughout the world.

After training with the best British Paediatric Urologists, David worked for a short period of time at Great Ormond Street Hospital before moving to Bristol where he was the leading Consultant Paediatric Urologist from 1982 to 2005. He was the founder of the Bristol Urological Institute in 1994. His investment in our specialty has been and still is quite extraordinary as shown by his multiple publications and the two editions of “Operative Paediatric Urology”, edited by David, which are a key reference for all paediatric urologists. David was invited as an expert in Paediatric Urology all around the world and his great sense of humour left warm memories in many places.

In 1992, Robert Whitaker, David, several prestigious British colleagues and I created the British Association of Paediatric Urologists (BAPU) at Selwyn College in Cambridge. It is now a flourishing society.

David’s expertise in teaching is well known by many of us with the regular live surgical meetings in Bristol where the most famous paediatric urologists demonstrated their skills under videocameras. In 2007, David was appointed as a Honorary Member of the European Society for Paediatric Urologists (ESPU) where he played a major role in its development.

David always showed a great interest in scientific publishing. He was one of the lead editors of the British Journal of Urology with Hugh Whitfield from 1993 to 2002.

In 2005, David, some very good friends and I created the Journal of Pediatric Urology which is now the lead Journal in our speciality. David is the Chief Editor of this Journal.

Life has not always been very kind to David and despite health problems and the very sad early loss of Suzie, his wonderful wife, David has always been a very positive, energetic and charming person. He is a real gentleman and certainly an example for me and many of his close friends.
